Yes, it could be worse…

This is what yseterday felt likeSo the Schiavo case has been the headline of the day. I’m not going to throw too much into the debate because I agree with what Acidman said nobody will ever know what the Mrs. Schiavo wanted.

I know personally that if I was on artificial life support with no hope of recovery I’d want Michelle and my family members to pull the plug. Of course, I also take a moment to ask the question “What if being a vegetable is the best thing that ever happened to me?” There I am in a zombie-like state of bliss unable to tell everyone “Don’t pull the plug! This is soooooooooooooooo cool!” Knowing my luck lately, that’s what would happen. I’d be 70 virgins in then *blip* no more life support.

One thing I definitely don’t agree with is the state & governor sticking their nose in. Mrs. du Toit makes a valid point that this ordeal is essentially a family matter between the husband and his wife.

I know that I’m now inclined to write living will. I’m fortunate enough to have a close relationship with my family so there shouldn’t be any doubts as to what I want for myself in this life or the next. BUT if the Schiavo case sets a bad precedent I don’t want some government official sticking his/her nose in my family business.

You need to read a book called “Johnny Got His Gun,” then ask yourself if you want to live that way. I don’t.

In reality, you need three types of Wills/Documents…

Living Will… which you know takes care of what to do during a medical situation.

Durable Power of Attorney – Designates someone to makes the decisions for you in case you can not.

I would say normally the first two go together…

    and Your Will… ummm.. Will.

It’s important to chose someone for your Power of Attorney that will do what YOU want done.

I haven’t read much on the case in Florida… but i wonder if it was done in that case…

Except Terri isn’t comatose or in a completely vegetative state. She’s actually in a state that has been rehabilitated before, i.e. she responds to stimuli, recognizes people, etc. The problem is she’s been denied court-ordered treatment for her brain damage by her husband. Yeah, you deny a brain-damaged person any treatment, and they don’t get better. SURPRISE!

That’s a load of crap, Fishman. The only ones who say she is recognizing people are her parents, who don’t exactly have an unbiased opinion and can’t accept the fact that their daughter is lost to them forever.
As for responding to stimuli, I can poke a flatworm with a stick, and it’ll wiggle. Doesn’t mean it has any higher brain functions. I guess you missed the report that said she’s got so much fluid on the brain that cerebral functions are impossible.
Damn, I think I’ll get a tattoo on my chest saying “In case of flat brain waves, Pull The Effing Plug!
